The fourth and fifth grade, also known as the Munsch-kins, study God's Word, the Bible, especially Old Testament stories. In October, the Reformation and Martin Luther are highlighted. Bible memory verses strengthen each religion lesson. Every day the class begins and ends in prayer. The Munsch-kins participate in many chapel worship services.
The fourth and fifth grade also assists in selling Jean Day tickets and recycling. |
The Reading classes in Grades 5 and 6 work on reading comprehension skills, finding the main, inference, and study skills while reading short stories, poems and chapter books.
This year's fifth grade delection includes Eleanor Estes' 100 Dresses, Eleanor Coerr's "Sadako", "The Cay" by Theodore Taylor and "Tuck Everlasting" by Natalie Babbitt, plus interesting challenging and enjoyable book reports, including biography books, how-to books, sports, mystery and animal books,
The 6th grade also reads short stories and poems as well as an esciting year of Newbery Book Reports. Classroom reading includes: John Steinbeck's "The Pearl", Mark Twain's " Tom Sawyer", C.S. Lewis' "The Silver Chair", "The Indian and the Cupboard" by L.R. Banks.
The 7th and 8th grade literature classes concentrate on fine literature classics, short stories, essays, poetry and novels. Book reports are also prepared.
This year the 7th grade will be studying Greek mythology. Classroom reading will include, William Fielding's "Lord of the Flies", Karen Hesses's "Music of the Dolphins", and "Phoenix Rising", "Nothing by the Truth" by Avi and Louis Lowry's "The Giver". The of the 7th grade literature classics favourite oral recitations are Robert W. Service's "The Cremation of Sam McGee" and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere."
The 8th grade literature class contains reading short stories, essays, poems and novels while delving into literature themes and terms. Book reports reflect individual student's readings. This year the 8th grade will be reading Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray", "Animal Farm" by George Orwell, "Out of the Dust" by Karen Hesse. "The Pigman" by Paul Zindel, and Lois Lowry's "Number of Stars".

English classes, grades 5-8, include a comprehensive Vocabulary study. English grammar is stressed in language art work and creative writing. Spelling books are utilized and correct spelling is stressed in all subjects. Every student prepares a writing portfolio. All writing follows "COPS", Capitilization, Over-all apprearance, Punctuation and Spelling.
