Academics : Second Grade
The second grade day begins, ends, and revolves around the Lord and His great love for us. Every morning begins with devotions, prayer, and singing. Then we proceed to the day’s studies which are challenging as well as interesting. The various areas of study are: reading, writing, phonics, language, math, science, social studies, and last but surely not least- religion.

The reading curriculum is literature based using anthologies from the
Silver Burdett Ginn and the Houghton Mifflin Company. The subject matter consists of themed units, trade books, listening lessons, skills lessons, cultural connections, oral reading, and related developmental activities. Comprehension quizzes are frequently given to reinforce reading skills and additional chapter books are introduced toward the end of the year.
Skill related activity cards are available and encouraged for the student’s individual enrichment.

Cursive writing is taught in first and further developed in second grade. Spelling, phonics and language are interrelated and complement each other. The spelling words are based on the sounds being studied and reviewed in phonics. While in phonics, the long and short vowels as well as the special sounds and exceptions are studied. In language, spelling words are used and reinforced while the students learn to organize their thoughts into complete sentences. This in turn leads to paragraph and story development. The parts of speech pertaining to sentence development are taught and reinforced as the year progresses. A Beka books are used in these subject areas. Additional supplemental books are also used when needed.

The mathematic curriculum is from Addison-Wesley and consists of a consumable student book and practice book. The subject matter is comprised of units pertaining to addition and subtraction up to and including three digit trading. Place values to one thousand, money, time, measurement, geometric figures, fractions, and graph making skills are further developed. Multiplication and division concepts are introduced as well. Manipulatives are used to introduce and develop the basic concepts. Also, problem solving techniques are developed and reinforced in each unit. Throughout the year speed drills are provided to help develop the students’ skills.
