Academics : Math

Mr. Schama, is the upper floor math teacher.

The math curriculum at Zion Lutheran School is a competitive program that will challenge students to work to their fullest potential.

In fourth grade, students first review addition and subtraction, place value and money. By the second month of school they move on to graphs, data and probability, followed by an intense study of multiplication and division. After they have mastered multiplication and division, they study time, measurement, geometry, fractions, decimals and the metric system.

The fifth grade continues to master what they have learned in fourth grade. The year begins reviewing numbers, operation, and place value. They then move onto whole numbers and decimals, followed by data and graphs, metric and measurement, fractions and mixed numbers, geometry, ratio and percent and probability.

Sixth grade begins with a review of whole number properties and place value. The sixth grade then moves onto a continuation of fractions and decimals followed by the metric system. The class then moves onto working with data, graphs, and statistics, followed by geometry, ratio, proportion, percent, integers, probability, and an introduction to algebra.

Seventh grade begins studying Pre-Algebra. All that they have mastered in the years before has prepared them for what they are going to be working with. The course begins with integers and variables and moves into equations, number theory, fractions, probability, and decimals. Finally, percents, data coordinating planes, square roots, polynomials, and geometry are covered.

The eighth grade math curriculum consists of Algebra. The 8th Grade students leave Zion Lutheran School fully prepared for high school math. The year begins with a review of real numbers and algebraic expressions and moves quickly into one variable equations and inequalities, polynomials, rational expressions and linear equations. Relations, functions, variation and radicals follow. The year closes with quadratic equations and statistics and probability.
